Addendum to “Making the Most out of Index”

The purpose of Search’s Index is to maintain a record of any document or application on your PC. There are over 200 common file types listed by the Index. These are located in the File Types tabbed window in Advanced Options.

Indexed file types

Stephen, who regularly reads Windows 7 news posts, offered the following observation about Windows 7 Index System.

There is absolutely no reason . . . that anyone should index the entirety of any drive. . . .One should index the folder locations that need to be indexed.

Stephen makes an important point!  Some writers also suggest leaving Drive C: out of the indexing system entirely. To make Search run faster, consider removing folders you don’t want search to index and leave only the folders that you use search frequently.

Within my system, I store all my documents on a second hard drive, Drive D. As a result of Stephen’s suggestion, I have modified my Search Index excluding certain folders from Drive D. Now Search is running faster!

Here’s how I did it!

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. In the Search box type, “indexing options”.

  3. Select Indexing Options.

  4. In the Indexing Options window, click the Modify button.

  5. The Index Locations window opens.

  6. Click the arrow button on Drive D.

  7. Drive D expands displaying a list of folders.expanding drive

  8. Scroll down the list and uncheck folders you don’t want indexed.

  9. Click the arrow button to close the Drive D.

The illustration below shows you the sequence to follow.

Note:  At the same time, I removed Drive C from Search’s Index Locations.

10.  Uncheck the Drive C’s box .

11.  Click the Ok Button.

Note: Once you remove a location from the Index Locations, for example a Drive, such as Drive C, you need to rebuild the Windows Index.

12.  Click the Advanced button.

13.  The User Account Control intervenes, click the OK button.

14.  The Advanced Options window opens, click the Rebuild button.

15.  A warning dialogue box appears, click the OK button.

16.  The Indexing Options window reopens and rebuilding commences.
